Vassili Kitsios

PhD Candidate

E:

biography

Vassili graduated from Mechanical Engineering and Commerce at the University of Western Australia (UWA) with first class honors. He produced an award winning final year engineering thesis on the “Optimisation of the Gas Exchange System of a Formula SAE Vehicle”, in addition to a vehicle that placed 2nd in the 2002 Formula SAE competition.

He has worked for: BHP Billiton; the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO); and General Motors Holden. He has also recently attained the status of Chartered Professional Engineer from the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust).

research interests

During his career to date Vassili has been heavily involved in the field
of fluid mechanics. He has decided to return to undertake his PhD to
further refine his skills in this area. His current PhD topic is on the
control of air flow over aircraft wings with the goal to maximise lift and
minimise drag with minimal control effort. The study will be undertaken
numerically using a code developed at Stanford University. This project is
in collaboration with Dr Andrew Ooi of the University of Melbourne, Prof.
Julio Soria from Monash University and Prof. Jean-Paul Bonnet from the
University of Poitiers in France.
