Orica Engineering Design Prize 2009

27 April 2010

Ian Kilpatrick, Bradley Nicholls, Andrew Banh and Joshua Chan are the joint winners of the 2009 Orica Design prize for their outstanding contributions to Mechanical Engineering Design at the University of Melbourne. The students each received their cheque and certificate from Dr Peter McGowan, Senior Engineering Consultant for Orica Engineering.

Each year Orica provides $3,000 for the Orica Design prize. This is shared equally in 2010 between the four joint winners.

Dr McGowan also provided a seminar to Professional Practice students (27 April 2010) on environmentally focused case studies from his extensive catalogue of engineering experiences with Orica.

Orica Engineering has been a long-time supporter of Engineering Design at the University of Melbourne. The Orica Design Prize has been awarded for more than 25 years to the outstanding student or students within the year-long design-300 subjects (the penultimate design subject in the Department of Mechanical Engineering). The award is based on project work performance. Four major projects are completed each year in design-300 subjects.

Congratulations to David Ackland who has won first place in the IMechE Australian final of the 'Speak out for engineering' Competition, where he was competing against finalists from other states. He gave a talk entitled "Unravelling the complexity of the shoulder". He will now compete in Malaysia in a large Australasian competition- involving countries such as China, Korea, and a number of south-east Asian countries.
